Lafon

Lafon

Domaine des Comtes Lafon is one of Burgundy’s most revered white wine producers, with a history stretching back over 150 years. Based in the heart of Meursault since 1869, the domaine has built its reputation on exceptional vineyard holdings, including all six of Meursault’s central premiers crus and the rare monopole Clos de la Barre. Its crown jewel is a small parcel in Le Montrachet Grand Cru, acquired in 1919, which remains among the most prized and exclusive plots in the Cote d'Or.

The estate took its name and direction when Marie Boch married Comte Jules Lafon in 1894. Originally from the south of France, Jules Lafon not only brought vision to the domaine but also became mayor of Meursault, cementing his influence in both civic and viticultural life. While Jules Lafon was the visionary who laid the foundation of the estate, it was his grandson Rene Lafon who showed unwavering commitment to preserving and strengthening the family legacy. For much of the 20th century, the Lafon vineyards were leased to sharecroppers, but Rene was determined to bring them back under full family control. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, his efforts succeeded, and the domaine was once again entirely managed in-house.

In 1985, Dominique Lafon succeeded his father Rene at the helm of a domaine already celebrated for its exceptional white wines. Over the course of his tenure from 1985 to 2021, he quietly but profoundly transformed the estate. In the 1990s, he pioneered the adoption of organic and biodynamic farming practices, and from the 2013 vintage onward, he implemented DIAM closures to combat premature oxidation. His winemaking philosophy evolved to emphasize purity, elevating the precision, consistency, and finesse of the wines to world class standards.

Today, chardonnay grapes are whole-bunch pressed and allowed to settle in tanks at low temperatures for approximately 24 hours. Fermentation begins in tanks before the wine is transferred to oak barrels for further fermentation and aging. The Le Montrachet Grand Cru is aged in 100% new oak for its first year, then racked into older barrels for a second winter, with bottling occurring in the subsequent spring or early summer.

The result is a portfolio of white wines that combine purity, tension, and depth, with each cru expressing its unique character. From the mineral-driven Genevrieres to the opulent yet focused Charmes, the ethereal refinement of Boucheres, and the majestic intensity of Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine des Comtes Lafon continues to define the pinnacle of Meursault. With the next generation, Lea and Pierre, now leading the estate, the domaine remains firmly rooted in tradition while shaping the future of Burgundy’s finest whites.
