Based in Vosne Romanee with just 3.5 hectares, Domaine Bizot is a small Burgundy producer that comes with a big “cult” status. The Domaine is led by Jean-Yves Bizot, a former geologist and professor of oenology whose passion for wine drove him to take up the reins from his father, Jean Bizot, in the late 1990s. Under his guidance, the Domaine was brought back to life and has risen to its current status among Burgundy aficionados in a short period of time.
His wine prices famously rose 60 times in the secondary market from 2015 to its peak in 2022, taking his village wine Vosne Romanee as an example. The magic behind the winery’s popularity stems from Jean-Yves Bizot’s vineyard philosophy, which is grounded in minimal intervention and a deep respect for the terroir. The vineyards are tended with meticulous care, employing hand-hoeing and other labor-intensive techniques to manage the soil and vines without the use of synthetic chemicals. In the cellar, Bizot’s approach is equally thoughtful and restrained. The grapes are not de-stemmed or pressed, but fermented in whole clusters.
Bizot’s parcels in Echezeaux Grand Cru and Vosne Romanee Premier Cru Les Jachees are particularly notable, with Echezeaux being its only Grand Cru and the production is just a tiny 5 barrels, along with holdings in village-level vineyards such Les Reas and Vosne Romanee that many Burgundy wine lovers adore.
Domaine Bizot's wines are celebrated for their purity, elegance, and expressive aromatics. They often exhibit a fine balance between power and finesse, with a silky texture that is characteristic of top Vosne Romanee producers. On the nose, Bizot’s wines typically offer vibrant red and dark berry notes, complemented by hints of spices, floral undertones, and a distinctive minerality. The palate is layered and complex, with a precise structure that unfolds gradually, revealing flavors of ripe cherries, blackcurrant, and a touch of earthy forest floor. The finish is long and nuanced, marked by finely woven tannins and a lingering minerality that speaks to the limestone-rich soils of Vosne Romanee.
