Ponsot

Ponsot

Domaine Ponsot’s history dates back to 1872, when William Ponsot, a member of the Dijon bourgeoisie, acquired Clos des Monts Luisants and a plot of Clos de la Roche in Morey Saint Denis. As a pioneer in winemaking, the estate began bottling its own wines in 1921 and started exporting them during the 1930s. By the 1950s, the estate had established a core set of principles focused on maintaining soil vitality through aeration without compaction. These sustainable farming practices continue to guide the winery to this day.

The winery has always been committed to blending tradition with modern technology. In the late 20th century, it embraced innovation by investing in advanced winemaking equipment, including temperature-controlled fermentation systems, inert gas protection, and a vertical press. Over the past decade, the estate has further advanced its practices by incorporating sensors and NFC technology into its bottles, enhancing preservation, tracking, and authenticity.

Domaine Ponsot’s wines are known for their natural style. The estate typically destems black grapes, employs natural fermentation in traditional oak vats, and avoids sulphiting. After fermentation, the wines mature in French oak barrels for 16 to 24 months, usually avoiding new barrels to preserve the purity of the terroir.

The flagship wine, Clos de la Roche, originates from a 3.2 ha plot planted with old vines averaging 65 years in age. The vineyard’s clay and limestone soils provide ideal conditions for producing high quality grapes. This wine masterfully combines power and elegance, delivering complex, well balanced flavours with a smooth tannic structure and excellent aging potential. Another notable wine, Chapelle Chambertin, is crafted from a small 0.5 ha plot, yielding approximately 2,300 bottles annually. The wine is distinguished by its delicate aromas, firm tannins, harmonious taste, and a long mineral finish.

Domaine Ponsot has always been a family-run estate. Laurent Ponsot, the former owner, was a pivotal figure known for his passion for vines, winemaking, land, and technological innovation. He was among the first in the world to create a wine website and dedicated 20 years researching the ideal cork. Laurent also helped track down and expose the infamous fine wine counterfeiter Rudy Kurniawan, earning international recognition.

In 2017, Laurent and his son, made the decisive choice to leave the family estate to establish their own brand, Laurent Ponsot, continuing to craft wines that embody their unique philosophy and vision. His departure also marked a shift for Domaine Ponsot, as certain wines such as Clos Saint Denis and Griotte Chambertin are no longer under the estate’s management. As a result, older vintages from these estates have become rare treasures.

Domaine Ponsot is now managed by Laurent Ponsot’s sister, Rose-Marie Ponsot, who continues to uphold the estate’s legacy. Under her leadership, the winery remains dedicated to crafting world-class wines, honoring its rich history since 1872 while preserving the tradition and excellence that define the estate.
