Hubert Lignier
Domaine Hubert Lignier is a storied family-run estate located in Morey Saint Denis, Burgundy, with a winemaking heritage that began in 1885. Now in its sixth generation, the domaine is best known for its flagship cuvee, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. This wine embodies the estate's philosophy of elegance, depth and expressive terroir. Each bottle is crafted with minimal intervention and a deep respect for nature, offering both pleasure and emotion.
The modern chapter began in 1992 when Romain Lignier joined his father Hubert, bringing renewed focus to soil health and vineyard care. Following Romain’s tragic passing in 2004, his brother Laurent took over the estate, guiding it towards organic viticulture. By 2007, all synthetic treatments had been eliminated, and in 2019 the domaine received official organic certification, reflecting its commitment to sustainability and biodiversity.
In the vineyard, old vines dating back to 1936 are preserved through massale selection. The team avoids herbicides and insecticides, instead planting legumes between rows, grafting young vines and using compost sourced from local farms. These practices help the estate adapt to climate change while maintaining the integrity of its heritage.
Winemaking is guided by patience and restraint. Grapes are harvested by hand, carefully sorted and vinified with a proportion of whole clusters to enhance complexity and balance. The wines are aged for nearly two years in oak barrels, with a modest use of new oak, and are bottled by gravity without filtration or clarification. The result is a collection of refined and expressive wines with impressive ageing potential and immediate charm.
Today, Domaine Hubert Lignier cultivates 11 hectares across the Cote de Nuits and Cote de Beaune. Under Laurent’s leadership, and with the gradual arrival of Sebastien and Maelle, the estate continues to evolve while remaining true to its roots. Each wine reflects a quiet mastery, enduring passion and the timeless character of Burgundy.
