Leflaive
Domaine Leflaive occupies an unassailable position at the apex of white Burgundy. Few names command such reverence, with their Chardonnays serving as the benchmark of excellence. Their wines consistently achieve the highest critical scores and command premium prices in the trading market.
Founded in 1717, the domaine we know today traces back to Joseph Leflaive (1870–1953), while his sons Vincent and Jo built the reputation Leflaive enjoys at present. In 1990, Vincent’s daughter Anne Claude and Jo’s son Olivier managed the estate together until Olivier left in 1994 to run his own negociant business. Anne Claude revolutionized the estate by introducing biodynamic practices, producing wines that truly reflect their origins. After her passing in 2015, her nephew Brice de la Morandiere continues this commitment to excellence, crafting wines that are mineral, elegant, and generous.
What truly sets Domaine Leflaive apart is their remarkable collection of vineyard sites across Puligny Montrachet. Montrachet remains the crown jewel. Their tiny holding produces just a few hundred bottles annually, each achieving perfect balance between power and elegance with incredible aging potential spanning decades. Sitting above Montrachet on the hillside, Chevalier Montrachet produces wines of remarkable finesse and mineral purity. Batard Montrachet and Bienvenues Batard Montrachet, located below Montrachet, offer different expressions of Grand Cru quality. The former tends to be finer and more aromatic with excellent structure and complexity, whilst the latter delivers remarkable depth and character, offering what many consider excellent value within the Grand Cru hierarchy.
Beyond these Grand Cru sites, the estate’s Premier Cru holdings, such as Clavoillons, Folatieres, Combettes, and Pucelles, each contribute their own distinct characteristics to the estate's portfolio. Clavoillons offers the lightest, most forward style; Folatieres produces richer, riper wines; Combettes shows great finesse with tremendous palate length. However, Pucelles stands apart—adjacent to Batard Montrachet, it possesses Grand Cru quality with great depth of flavour, concentration, and remarkable class.
Today, when wine enthusiasts around the world speak of the greatest white wines, Domaine Leflaive is invariably part of the conversation. These wines represent the pinnacle of white Burgundy, perfect for special occasions or serious collectors, while embodying the very essence of Puligny Montrachet’s extraordinary terroir.
