Domaine Jacques Prieur boasts a rich history spanning over a century, witnessing the evolution of Burgundy. In 1868, Claude Duvergey and Marie Taboureau united in marriage, founding the Duvergey Taboureau House. Over the following decades, they acquired vineyards spread across various appellations. Lacking direct heirs, they passed the estate to their niece, Helene Taboureau, who later entrusted it to her son, Jacques Prieur.
Jacques Prieur holds a significant place in the history of Burgundy wine. In 1924, he co-founded one of the region's grandest celebrations, the "Paulee de Meursault," with Jules Lafon, bringing together local vintners to celebrate the harvest's conclusion. He was also a co-founder of the esteemed "Chevaliers du Tastevin," an organization dedicated to promoting Burgundy wines.
Since settling in Meursault in the 19th century, the estate has expanded to encompass 21 hectares of vineyards, including prestigious plots such as Montrachet, Chevalier Montrachet, Corton Charlemagne, Echezeaux, Clos Vougeot, Musigny, Chambertin, and Clos de Beze. Additionally, it boasts over ten high-quality premier crus, such as Meursault Perrieres and Meursault Charmes. Vineyards are cultivated using sustainable farming methods and to reduce human intervention. These practices include soil tillage in place of chemical treatments and the incorporation of biodynamic principles, such as aligning tasks with the lunar calendar.
In winemaking, they use small 15 kg crates during harvest to maintain grape quality, followed by double sorting to select the best fruit. While red wines were traditionally made with 100% de-stemming, current practices increasingly incorporate whole bunches depending on the vintage and vineyard. The wines mature in varying proportions of new oak barrels, with Grand Cru wines typically using 50%-80% new oak and Premier Crus around 30% new oak, aging for approximately 20 months. Their white wines often undergo 100% malolactic fermentation, resulting in a round and smooth palate.
Sourced from a tiny 0.59-hectare plot, Domaine Jacques Prieur’s prestigious parcel in the Montrachet Grand Cru produces wines of unparalleled richness and depth. These wines reveal layers of ripe orchard fruits, citrus, and honey, seamlessly intertwined with mineral precision and a long, harmonious finish.
Their flagship red wine, Musigny, comes from a 0.76-hectare plot with thin, stony soils that provide excellent drainage and heat retention. This exquisite wine offers inviting violet aromas, complemented by notes of vanilla, spice, and menthol. On the palate, it delivers a full bodied, juicy fruit character with a silky, mature texture that remains firm and fresh throughout.
