Domaine Jacques-Frederic Mugnier shines as a paragon of exquisite quality in Chambolle-Musigny, revered alongside Roumier and Comte Georges de Vogue as one of the "Top Trio of Chambolle Musigny."
Founded in 1863 by Frederic Mugnier, the estate originally spanned nearly 20 hectares across Chambolle Musigny and Nuits Saint Georges in the early 20th century. Even before the Appellations d’Origine system was established in 1878, the Domaine mirrored Bordeaux's practices, selling wine under labels that bore only the words “Chateau Chambolle Musigny”. It wasn't until 1978 that Frederic’s great-grandson, Jacques-Frederic Mugnier, took direct management of their Chambolle Musigny vineyards. After JF Mugnier’s passing, his son Frederic Mugnier fully assumed management of the estate in 1985.
Under Frederic Mugnier's stewardship, the vineyards have been free of weedkillers and other chemical sprays since 1989. He employed tailor pruning techniques for different vines, promoting healthier soil and achieving optimal yield. In the winery, the approach has evolved from partial stalk retention in the 80s and 90s to the current practice of 100% destemming. Fermentation utilizes natural yeasts and extends over a relatively long period, maintaining a gentle process throughout. The resulting wines mature in oak barrels for approximately 18 months, with a declining preference for new oak—peaking in the 90s and reducing to around 20% by 2008. Bottling is done with minimal or without fining or filtration.
From vineyard to cellar, every step reflects Frederic Mugnier’s winemaking philosophy, enhanced by wonderful teamwork. This approach produces wines that are both powerful and elegant, with each bottle exuding finesse, silkiness, and structure.
The core offerings of JF Mugnier predominantly hail from Chambolle Musigny. The Les Fuees 1er Cru, situated next to Bonnes Mares, features vines planted in 1960. These grapes are small and thick-skinned, yielding wines of concentrated essence and deep color, with an annual production of just 1,500-3,500 bottles.
A hallmark of their portfolio is the Les Amoureuses 1er Cru, with the youngest vines planted in 1966 and a significant portion dating back to 1954 and 1956. This wine, considered emblematic of Burgundy's essence, boasts intense aromas, rich texture, and a long, delicate finish, rivaling top-tier Grand Crus, with a yearly output of only 900 - 2,700 bottles.
Another flagship wine is the Musigny Grand Cru, sourced from a mere 1-hectare plot with vines planted in 1947 and 1962. Mugnier prioritizes the expression of terroir and the quality of the wine above all else. He even replanted a small plot from Musigny in 1997 and declassified the vines to a Chambolle Musigny village wine. Consequently, JF Mugnier's Musigny Grand Cru is crafted exclusively from old vines, offering a palate of depth and concentration, with remarkable richness and aromatic complexity, limited to an annual production of 2,000 - 5,000 bottles.
