Chateau Angelus is one of the most prestigious St Emilion estates, proudly owned by the Bouard de Laforest family for over 224 years. The legacy of Angelus dates back to Jean de Bouard de Laforest, a brave king's bodyguard who settled in the picturesque village of Saint-Emilion. However, it was in 1909 that the estate truly took shape when Maurice de Bouard de Laforest inherited the vineyard and acquired the renowned "L’Angelus" vines, expanding the estate to its current 39 hectares.
Situated in a natural amphitheater overlooked by the iconic spires of three St Emilion churches, the vineyard echoes with the melodic tolling of the Angelus (church bells), a timeless reminder to pause and reflect. This cherished tradition is honored in the elegant label of Angelus wines, paying tribute to the estate's spiritual heritage and enduring grace.
Under the guidance of Hubert de Bouard de Laforest, the 7th generation custodian, Angelus achieved the prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classe A status in 2012, a testament to the family's unwavering commitment to excellence. Upon his takeover of the estate in 1985, Hubert implemented innovative practices by reducing the use of chemical fertilizers, introducing grass cover in select parcels, enhancing the leaf canopy, and applying green harvesting to control yields. Angelus exclusively uses new oak barrels for aging its wine, which goes into barrels and ages on fine lees as early as possible. This process imbues the wine with its colour, richness, and complexity of aroma, while also embodying a distinctly modern interpretation of St Emilion.
In 2022, Chateau Angelus, along with Chateau Cheval Blanc and Chateau Ausone, announced their withdrawal from the St Emilion classification system. These estates continue to produce highly respected and sought after wines despite their departure from the official classification.
