Chateau Ausone has been a symbol of stability in the changing world of Bordeaux estates. Since the 13th century, this prestigious St Emilion property has passed through the hands of only 3 families. The Dubois-Challon and Vauthier families made their mark as the third custodians in the late 17th century, a legacy proudly carried forward today by Alain Vauthier and his daughter, Pauline Vauthier, direct descendants of the estate's 17th-century pioneers. Alongside Chateau Cheval Blanc, Chateau Ausone was bestowed the prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classe A ranking when the classification was first introduced in 1955, solidifying its place among the elite of Bordeaux.
Under the leadership of Alain Vauthier, Ausone’s vineyard has become the focal point of excellence, with a significant investment in enhancing quality and consistency. Diverging from the norm in St Emilion, where Merlot reigns supreme, this 7-hectare vineyard is mainly planted with Cabernet Franc, with a smaller proportion Merlot. The average age of the vines are 50 years, while in some places the vines are more than 100 years of age, adding depth and character to the wines. Embracing a holistic approach, the estate considers the wider ecosystem, harnessing its energy to enrich the soil and nurture the vines.
The winemaking process at Chateau Ausone is a symphony of tradition and innovation, with a meticulous cold maceration and vinification in traditional 54-hectoliter oak vats. Since the 1995 vintage, malolactic fermentation has been taking place in French oak barrels, adding complexity and depth to the wines. The Grand Vin is aged in 100% new French oak barrels for up to 24 months. The annual production is controlled to around 1,500 to 2,000 cases for exceptional quality.
Chateau Ausone’s reputation has elevated starting from the 1990s and has consistently garnered high praise from critics and enthusiasts, a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence. The wines exude richness and concentration, yet surprise with an elegance and finesse that defy expectations for the region. Balancing power with finesse, these wines captivate the palate with their ethereal quality, showcasing a purity of fruit and exceptional balance that promise longevity and enjoyment, both in their youth and with age. As the estate enters a new chapter with Pauline Vauthier assuming a more prominent role, the future shines bright with promise, ensuring that Chateau Ausone remains a must-experience destination for wine lovers seeking the pinnacle of St Emilion excellence.
