A fully mature yet still reasonably fresh nose of spice and smoky black fruit that displays enough sous-bois toi remark upon. There is fine size, weight and power to the delicious middle weight flavors that flash a certain muscularity on the impressively long finish that has develop excellent depth. This still mildly austere effort is one of those wines that reached its apogee some years ago yet it holding remarkably well, indeed it should continue to do so for at least another decade. I would further observe that the '88 Roche is less '88 like than most examples of the vintage today. Tasted on multiple occasions and while the tannins are a bit softer each time the essential character of this wine remains consistent except for one bottle opened in 2012 that was badly corked.
