Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut St Jacques has a simple, quite juicy bouquet with ample fruit—cranberry, wild strawberries and a touch of orange peel. It seems to coalesce and gain harmony with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin and a fine line of acidity, quite pure and juicy with a primal, black plum and white pepper-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine indeed, but it will need another couple of years and then it may deserve a higher score. Stylish and traditional Lavaut-Saint-Jacques from Domaine Duroché.
