This was our first Petrus and we were not disappointed - I thought that this wine was really outstanding, even for a lesser year like '92. Had it with Kim as the highlight of a 4-course 18th anniversary dinner. Moderate barnyard nose which blew away with about 4 hours of decanting. Still a very nice ruby / garnet color with fairly heavy sedimentation suspended throughout the wine. As noted above, initial nose with significant barnyard and terroir, once that blew away bouquet consisted of dark fruit, chocolate and some mocha with underlying smoke. Very smooth, good mouth feel, great aftertaste, tannins very well integrated at this point and felt like this wine is at it's prime. Primary flavors consisted of underlying terroir and smoke with prominent dark fruit, blackberry and cedar with development of mocha on the palate at the end. Very very good.

The 1992 Petrus is clearly one of the two candidates for wine of the vintage. The normal production of 4,500 cases was severely reduced to only 2,600 cases, resulting in an atypically concentrated, powerfull, rich wine with a dark, saturated ruby/purple color, a tight but promising nose of sweet black cherry fruit, vanillian, caramel, and herb-tinged mocha notes. Concentrated and powerful, with superb density of fruit and richness, as well as wonderful sweetness to its tannin, this is a brilliant effort for the vintage. The vine requires 3-5 years of cellaring and should keep for 15-20+.
