Chambolle did extremely well in general in 1998 and this beauty is just one more confirmation of that. The expressive nose has now gone almost completely secondary (though with no sous-bois) that is nuanced with hints of violets and anise plus a fascinating array of spices. This remains mildly austere on the palate though much less so than it was in its true youth with plenty of soil and mineral-inflected suggestions to the impressively dense and powerful yet classy flavors that deliver excellent length on the slightly raspy finish. For my taste this is drinking as well now as it ever will though it should be able to hold at this level for perhaps another 10 years or so. Multiple and mostly consistent notes though a few bottles have displayed some leafiness on the finish and another displayed a touch of brett.
