Among the four vintage pairs where two versions of La Romanée were produced, 2002 is the one with the most quality variation. The wood treatment, as well as the level of toast, is markedly more pronounced though it stops short of dominating the less perfumed nose that otherwise offers up the same aromatic profile. There is excellent richness and vibrancy to the equally mineral-driven flavors that culminate in a more structured and less refined finish due to the presence of more prominent wood tannins. They don't appear to be sufficient to materially detract from the overall sense of balance but they will require this to be cellar for a few extra years first. But the major difference is simply one of elegance and refinement and there is really no comparison between the two versions in 2002.
