Ratings & Tasting Notes

A prodigious wine, Dugat’s black-colored 2001 Chambertin boasts a blackberry, chocolate, tar, and dark cherry-filled nose. Medium to full-bodied, supple, sweet, and thick, its voluminous, harmonious character conquers the palate with unbelievably dense layers of lush black fruits. A viscous, yet perfectly-balanced effort, it sports an imposing, seemingly unending finish. This stately Burgundy transcends its vintage. Wow! Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020+. No offense to Peter Weygandt, this estate’s importer, but can anyone think of an easier job than having to sell Bernard Dugat’s wines? For the past decade, this 7.5 hectare (18.53 acre) domaine has consistently produced exceptional wines, a testimony to the relentless pursuit of quality exhibited by Dugat, his wife, and children. “Yes, it’s true that we live in the vineyards, working from morning to night, but the primary reasons we don’t have the same problems as many others in Burgundy is that we concentrate on having low yields and are fortunate enough to have old vines,” sais Bernard Dugat.

Explosive doesn't adequately describe just how powerful and vibrant the black fruit aromas are but as forward and intense as the nose is, the flavors are equally backward, brooding and completely reserved in personality. Thick, palate staining and remarkably dense with length that I could still taste an hour later. This is massive but not hard or one-dimensional and as remarkable as this is already, the potential for future improvement is uncanny - indisputably one of the greatest wines of the vintage and it wouldn't surprise me at all if one day my score proved to be conservative because it is so rare to find this level of extract. In short, this is genuinely awesome.
