It is a privilege to taste and review this wine. I only wish I had tasted it 3-4 years ago when it was closer to medium maturity. And yet this is still a wonderful wine that was surprisingly still juicy and fruit filled. The cork was moldy and soft and I extracted with a two prong ah-so and the fill was to the neck line. I bought this as part of an 83 tasting that never took place and to compare it especially with 83 Chateau Palmer. By the way this Palmer vintage is still tannic and inaccessible but I digress. The las Cases is just wonderful in comparison. The wine is still mostly ruby with only a hint of brick on the rim. Not a big Bordeaux nose with only subtle cedar to suggest the region. The blackberry fruit is still relatively fresh and the tannins are melted and completely resolved. Probably just past its peak but still very drinkworthy and was very good with grilled lamb and a honey mustard sauce.

Like so many 1983s, this wine entered full maturity 6-7 years ago and now seems to be suggesting that it needs to be drunk up quickly, as the tannins and acidity continue to take hold, and as the fruit fades. The wine has a dark plum/garnet color with some amber at the edge. The wine is medium-bodied with a bit of sharpness in the finish. However, the aromas and attack of the wine are still intact, but consumption definitely seems warranted. Anticipated maturity: Now-2010.
